Odisha Channel Bureau Sambalpur, Dec 24: As fresh cases of jaundice were bring reported in this western Odisha city, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who came here today to take stock of the jaundice situation, announced a series of measures to contain the alarming spread of the disease.As a long term measure, Patnaik announced a Rs.100-crore package for strengthening and upgrading the distribution network of pipe water supply in Sambalpur Municipal Corporation area.As an immediate measure, 500 syntax tanks with about six lakh litre capacity of water will be positioned along with 50 tractor-mounted tanks at various locations to meet the drinking water requirement in the affected areas.Patnaik also announced a Rs.60-crore package for renovation of three major drains in the city – Dhobijor, Haradjor and Tangana.At least 24 persons have died of jaundice in Sambalpur and adjoining areas during the past few months, while more than 1500 have been affected by the disease.A poor and badly maintained sewerage system and damaged water supply pipelines are said to be the main reason behind the jaundice outbreak in the city.Patnaik was accompanied by Chief Secretary Gokul Pati.State Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and Health secretary Arati Ahuja were also present when Patnaik reviewed the situation at a meeting.
