Bijay Kumar RoutAngul, June 19: Angul District Superintendent of Police has introduced a new system to make the police more accountable and people-friendly.He has advised people to mention their mobile phone number while filing any complaint with the police. With the help of contact numbers, the complainants are to be informed about the progress of their case through SMS from district police office and also invite their remarks on performance of the police. The police station which will get good remarks regularly will be adjudged the best police station in the district. There are 23 police stations in the district.“The system was introduced last month. After getting FIR with the mobile numbers, the district police office here started sending SMS to the complainants about the progress of the case after some days and invited their remarks.A total of 300 FIRs were received in all the police stations last month and SMS was sent to 107 people who made complaints at different police stations,” said Superintendent of Police Narasingha Bhol.He said that out of 107 SMS sent from district police office to the mobile numbers of the complainants, only 12 of them replied. Some of them replied very good and some also remarked unsatisfactory.“The response of the people has been very good this month. Now we have mobile numbers in almost 90 per cent of the complaints made in different police stations in the district this month,” Bhol added.“We have also decided that the police station which will get maximum good remarks from the litigant public will be adjudged as the best police station in the district in the year. Those who will get adverse remarks will also be dealt accordingly,” he added. He said the main aim was to make police more accountable to the people and to let the complainants know about the fate of their complaints instead of rushing to police stations and being victim of harassments.“I feel that since almost everyone has a mobile phone now, it will not be difficult to introduce this method to give justice to the people.” Bhol observed.“It is very welcome step by police chief of the district.A complainant now can know about the fate of his case through mobile phone without coming to police stations and being subjected to various harassments and exploitation,” said secretary of Angul Bar Association Jitendra Sahu.
