Cuttack: Kalia, one of the conjoined twins of Odisha who were separated in one of most complex operations ever carried out in the country, passed away due to septicemia at SCB Medical College Hospital here on Wednesday.
According to hospital sources, Kalia passed away while undergoing treatment at the trauma ICU of the hospital. Jaga is doing fine at the hospital, sources added.
The twins were separated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in October 2017.
They were shifted from AIIMS to the SCB Medical College Hospital in September 2019 after a two-year observation and follow-up treatment.
According to sources, Kalia’s condition had deteriorated last week but he passed away despite all efforts by the doctors.
The parents of the twins belonged to Kandhamal district of the State. The plight of the twins had caught the State government’s attention after it was highlighted in the media.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had granted Rs. 1 core towards the surgery of the conjoined twins Jaga and Balia from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
