Odisha Channel Bureau Bhubaneswar, Sep 29: The candidates supported by the students’ wing of the ruling Biju Janata Dal won the main posts in the students’ union polls in Utkal University (Vani Vihar) in the elections held here on Monday.This is for the first time that the BJD made inroads to Utkal University since it started ruling the State in 2000.Biju Chhatra Janata Dal leader Rajesh Raj Swain was elected as the president of the Vani Vihar students’ union.He defeated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad candidate Manas Sahu by a margin of 136 votes.BCJD candidate Suryakant Sahoo won the post of general secretary in the Utkal University students’ union.The students’ wing of the Congress, which had been dominating the students’ union polls for the last 14 years, had not fielded any candidate in this election.ABVP, however, managed to win the president’s post in the students’ union elections of the University Law College located at Vani Vihar.Meanwhile, the BCJD leaders claimed that BJD supported candidates had won the students’ union elections in 95 per cent of the students’ union polls held in various colleges and universities across Odisha.
