Odisha Channel Bureau Bhubaneswar, Sep 11: One person was killed and another was seriously injured when police opened at a gathering of protesters outside Chandpur police station in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Thursday.Hundreds of local people had gathered outside the police station demanding arrest of those involved in the murder of four members of a family in the area on September 6.Police opened fire after they failed to bring the situation under control despite using teargas shells and lathi-charging the agitated villagers.The person who was killed in police firing was identified as Pradip Behera.On the other hand, the police claimed that 15 of their men were injured when the protesters pelted stones at them.Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was prompt to announce that Rs.2 lakh ex-gratia will be paid to the family of Behera who was killed in police firing.The ex-gratia would be paid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, according to an official release.Patnaik also announced that the government would bear the expenses towards the medical treatment of those injured in the incident.
